Watching the Directives – Supporting Customer Compliance

Dear Reader

At Arrow we recognise that supporting our customers means more than simply offering a broad portfolio of products. That’s why we continue to invest in value added services ranging from technical support to advanced supply chain solutions.

One area that has become much more important in recent years has been support for customers as they work to comply with new and emerging legislation. The most prominent example of such legislation has been the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive, which came into effect in July 2006. More recently, on 1st June 2007 (and with a phased implementation of the obligations between then and 2018) a new European regulation known as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals) came into effect. Designed to improve the protection of human health, REACH represents a complete restructuring of the chemical substance control legislation in Europe. In particular, REACH makes industry responsible for assessing and managing the risks posed by chemicals and providing appropriate safety information to their users.

REACH has a direct impact on the electronics industry as it covers products (or, in EU terminology, ‘articles’) from which certain chemicals may be released. And with its position in the supply chain, the distribution channel has a pivotal role to play in helping its customers ensure that they meet the REACH requirements.

It is for this reason that Arrow is working closely with all of its suppliers - whether they are within or outside of the EU – in order to obtain all of the information needed to support the REACH requirements. The company is also monitoring all new developments and obligations, including those relating to Annex XIV (a list of substances subject to authorisation).

REACH is just the latest in a long line of legislative requirements that have a potential impact on distributors and their customers. Arrow understands the importance of such legislation and remains committed to providing the information and support needed to help customers address the various legislative requirements as they apply to their business.

I do hope that you enjoy this issue of Arrow Innovation. As always, should you have any comments or queries on any of the stories covered, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
