Space-saving solution for secondary-side rectification for SMPS designs
The Power-SPM™ FPP06R001 module from Fairchild Semiconductor® provides a highly efficient, reliable and space-saving solution for secondary-side rectification in SMPS designs.



The new module increases efficiency in power supplies, offering designers the ability to meet the stringent requirements of the next-generation ENERGY STAR standard. This specifies that power supplies must achieve 85% or greater efficiency at normal output load conditions; the figure will increase to 88% in future generations.

Incorporating two PowerTrench® MOSFETs and a high-current-gate driver in a compact transfer-moulded package, the Power-SPM™ is a highly integrated synchronous rectification module that increases system ruggedness and simplifies board design. By eliminating up to ten discrete components, it is claimed to enhance space efficiency, reducing board space significantly.

The FPP06R001 provides 10% lower on-resistance and 16% lower stray inductance compared with discrete solutions, which results in lower thermal dissipation and reduced voltage stress. In addition, voltage spikes are reduced, improving design margins and lowering EMI.

The module is supplied in a very compact EPM15 package, addressing the low-profile requirements of high-end, ultra-slim SMPS designs. It utilises lead-free (Pb-free) terminals and has been characterised for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the Pb-free reflow requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020. All of Fairchild's products are designed to meet the requirements of the European Union's Directive on the restriction of the use of certain substances (RoHS).
