Full range of converters, references, amplifiers and microprocessors
Analog Devices’ motor control solutions solve a range of challenges associated with current and voltage monitoring, optical encoder feedback, and resolver-to-digital conversion. The company pioneered the development of highly integrated motor control solutions and offers a wide variety of amplifiers, iCoupler® digital isolators, voltage references, microprocessors, and power management products to meet industrial, commercial, medical and automotive design objectives.

Fast, precise motor control is particularly important in applications such as assembly-line robotics, power-assisted steering, aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing. Such environments require closed-loop control to provide the necessary performance and adaptability to varying load conditions.

Closed-loop servos have better reliability and repeatability, are less susceptible to noise and drift with temperature and time, and are easier to communicate with. However, they rely on high-speed digital processors and modern data converters for successful operation. Analog Devices provides a variety of standard, isolated, and resolver-to-digital products to satisfy these needs.

Current monitoring in the torque loop has to be high-voltage tolerant with respect to each phase and with respect to the controlling circuitry. Regulated safety standards from UL, CSA, and VDE require up to 3.75kV of reinforced isolation such as that specified with the current sensing AD7400 Analogue/Digital Converter (ADC). Said to be the industry’s highest-performance isolated ADC, the AD7400 uses Analog Devices’ iCoupler digital isolation technology to deliver higher speed and accuracy at lower power.

Shaft position feedback is typically based either on an optical encoder or a resolver. In these applications, the AD7266 dual simultaneous sampling ADC front end is optimised to interface with popular encoders using a minimum of support circuitry. The device is believed to be the industry’s fastest 12-bit, simultaneous sampling, Successive Approximation Register (SAR) ADC, featuring 2MSPS throughput per channel and less than half the power consumption of competitors. For users requiring an integrated resolver-to-digital solution, the AD2S1200 is an ideal alternative.

The AD7656 six-channel ADC is popular for either current control or shaft position feedback in multi-axis feedback loops. It provides simultaneous sampling, with true bipolar input ranges of ±5V and ±10V, with twice the memory of comparable devices.

The ADµC7000 series of precision analogue microcontrollers has multiple ADCs and DACs, combined with an ARM7 core and peripherals for motor controller applications.
